Opinion Poll: The Current State of Horror on Film

How do you feel about the quality of horror films of late?  Let us know what you think.

I, for one, feel that with a few shining exceptions, the Horror genre has been allowed to degenerate past the “slasher film” phase into an entirely more worthless one.  The new style seems to lean toward the “cookie cutter”,  no plot, one-star hollywood vehicle designed for a quick in-and-out at theaters.

The worst offenders are the ones that start off showing great potential, but then lose focus about half way through.  There’s nothing worse than being able to tell that the writers couldn’t figure out how to finish the story.

I’m starting to think that Hollywood is no longer capable of producing a quality Horror flick.  Someone help us out, please.

I agree. It seems all horror movies today are either for teens (like Prom Night) or remakes. I love Jason Vorhees and would love to see him again but to remake it isn't needed. We all know who he is.

Another thing that is being done is the rehashing of Japanese and Korean horror films. While I liked The Ring, the movies that followed it were lame.

Finally, create some original ideas. As I think about what movies would make me run to the theater, it would be another Evil Dead or Freddy vs Jason vs Ash.

Sadly, I agree with the both of you. The problem with most horror movies is they promote the living day-lights out of it and make it out to be something special and they get teens in the seats. They make money on opening weekend and then nothing. So they work for the initial payday not the legendary status or long term success of the film.

I'm tired of remakes and I'm bored of slasher films where the only goal is to make you jump with loud noises instead of actually making you fearful.

If you have a solution please let us know.
