Current Generation Game Consoles: What the Hell?

According to Dave Rosenberg of CNet News, sales of Nintendo WII consoles in 2008 more than doubled those of the XBox 360 and more than tripled those of the PS3 (reference this link:  http://news.cnet.com/8301-13846_3-10144307-62.html).  Why then are all the multi-platform games coming out this year available for PS3, XBox 360 and PC, but not the WII?

You’d think the 3rd party suppliers would at least be courting the console manufacturer with the most sales on some games.  But no.  There are a few bright spots (Ghostbusters is slated for a June 16 release date), but all in all the Wii’s near future looks to be dismal (see the images below for the gory details).

Is it just PS3 envy on my part, or did the brass at Nintendo piss off the president of Capcom again?  What the hell?  Maybe this is all part of the “Economic Stimulus Package” we’ve heard so much about.  To play Street Fighter 4 or Resident evil 5 you can either buy one system for $499 or another that has a laundry list of issues including rendering your disks unplayable (http://xbox-360-problems-fix.blogspot.com/), which requires the user to purchase a new system.   Funny, I don’t feel stimulated….

Movies I’m Looking Forward to in 2009 – Part 2

GI Joe:  The Rise of Cobra

The GI Joe movie may be good.  I hope it’s not the Van Damme Street Fighter movie reincarnated.  Twice-baked poo is just as bad the second time around.  Follow this link for some spofulous new photos of our brand new Joe team.  Yo Joe !!!  (thanks, IGN…I hope I’m allowed to post this link) http://media.movies.ign.com/media/552/552248/imgs_1.html

Star Trek:

I was always a Star Wars fan, but I can appreciate good Sci-Fi.  Thanks to Kevin M (a friend of mine from college) who enlighened us to the good, the bad, and the Shatner that is the Star Trek movie franchise.  The trailer for this movie looks amazing, and the promo media I’ve seen is well done.  I’ll definitely see this in the theaters (if time, money, and babysitter provides).

Dragonball Z:

….just kidding.   This one does look like the reincarnation of Street Fighter.  James Marsters…..what the hell was he thinking?

It’s time

I’ve held myself in check since October but I would like to say I am still on cloud 9 when I think about what the Philadelphia Phillies accomplished this year!  World Series Champions…I’m quite certain there aren’t many in this state that were thinking it was possible except for us few legitimate Phillies fans here.

In fact, I believe it was on this site where my brother actually insinuated that the Mets had all but locked up the N.L. East title and was looking on to bigger and better things…little did he know that those better things were just better tee times.

Now on to this year.  The Phillies have managed to bring back most of the team, minus Pat “The Bat”.  This does make me somewhat sad, however at the time they were in communication it was a drastically different market.  All that said, once the Howard deal (albeit through arbitration or long-term agreement) then the off-season will be all but over and a run at another championship can begin.  With all the youth that is now coming into their prime, and the success they had in the playoffs could they make another appearance in October?  One can hope.

From what I understand, Vegas has high odds of a Red Sox/Phillies Series…while this could make my life a bit complicated, I would not be opposed to the Phillies against anyone next year.

As stated before, I have waited quite some time to express myself about the breaking of the curse this past October.  Is it ironic that the year I make it to my Mecca in Philly is the same year that the curse of William Penn is no more?  Thanks to Elaine for getting me that present, because of you we were able to spark something special and be present at the beginning of quite an amazing run.

Publicly Admitting…

As I was sitting at my computer doing classwork I realized that I really hadn’t posted in quite some time.  In fact I had neglected my duties on this site altogether.

While penning this apology to all 5 of our semi-faithful fans I decided to open up and provide self-disclosure.

At this moment of weakness I would like to publicly admit that I in fact think Aquaman is one of the greatest superheros of all time.  There I said it…why does this not feel as liberating as I expected it to?  Anyway…the often under-appreciated superhero needs his just respect.  After all what percentage of the Earth is covered in water?  That’s right, this planet is mostly aquatic so why wouldn’t we need such a hero?  My thoughts exactly.

While I know this will set me up for any number of insults and public ridicule, I thought that it was time I accepted my fandom of the hero from Atlantis.

I encourage you to please offer who you think is the most underrated (or overrated) superhero?  Yes I’ll even let you swith to Marvel if you feel like slumming it for a spell.

On a side note, of equal interest to me is Hawkman.  I figured, if I’m going to open myself up so much for attack I might as well get my money’s worth.

Heroes Returns: Monday, February 2nd

If you haven’t seen this show yet, or if you’ve stopped watching for whatever reason, now’s the time to tune in again. With a new storyline that appears to have everything except a 50 ft. tall sentinel, this could be the best season yet.

That being said, I’d much rather be watching Chuck (in my opinion, one of the more under-rated and under-appreciated shows on TV today) and Heroes tonight  than that hot made-for-tv mess NBC made of “The Last Templar”.  Granted I only watched the first hour last night, but heard Raymond Khoury turning over in his grave 5 minutes into the show (and he’s still alive).  Think “the Librarian”, but not realizing how bad it is.

HEROES returns Monday, February 2nd.  Check your local listings for airtimes.

Oscar Snub

Today the Oscar list came out, giving each category with the movies up for an Oscar.  While I generally do not care which movies are on the list because they tend to be independent films, I am surprised that the number one grossing movie of the year and second only to Titanic would be left off.

The Dark Knight was a masterpiece, combining reality with fantasy.  It was the Godfather of our generation and people will be using it as a springboard for future comic films (hopefully not another Fantastic Four).  The acting of both Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart was superb; Ledger being so good that you were convinced that he was the Joker the whole time.  The one thing I do dislike about the film is that Christian Bale has that stupid deep voice when Batman, even when it is just him and Rachael Dawes.  She knows who you are, Bruce Wayne, dump the voice.

Watching this film on Blu-Ray makes me truly appreciate the film and I am disappointed that it was snubbed because it isn’t the “normal” film they put up for Oscars.

Movies I’m looking forward to in 2009

Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen

Being an old Transformers fan from the beginning, this is number 1 on my list. I liked the first movie for what it was and was pleasantly surprised by Michael Bay’s vision. I’ll admit the early reports had me worried, but I think everyone involved did a pretty good job of bringing the TF’s to life. I’ve seen every episode of the old cartoons and the animated movie multiple times. Thing is, I’ve seen them recently too and realized that the show wasn’t nearly as good as we all remember. The mythology written into it was second to none, but the plots themselves were nothing more than 22 minute commercials, with 5 minute breaks for ….more commercials.  And the original animated movie was nothing more than a steaming bowl of turd with whipped cream on top (my apologies to Robert Stack, Leonard Nimoy, and Orson Welles). Let’s face it, Bay had nowhere to go but up.

X-Men Origins:  Wolverine

I’m curious to see if Fox can do the X-Men some justice with the Wolverine prequel. I don’t even want to talk about X3. See my comments above for more on steaming poo and whipped cream.  The initial photos and trailer look promising, but so did the trailer for X3.   Please flush twice, it’s a long way to Fox studios.

Watchmen

I really need to pick up a copy of the Watchmen and read that again.  It’s the graphic novel that changed my outlook on comics.  My best friend collected them for years and I always laughed them off as the folly of geeks.  Not like my collection of Transformers.  That was completely different.  But I digress.  If this is movie is half as good as what I remember from the book, we could have another Dark Knight on our hands.  Or it could make Troll 2 look Oscar-worthy.  Time will tell.

…to be continued. Please feel free to comment.

Just a thought…..

It’s strange.  I can’t get 3 words out of my kids at the dinner table

for example:

ME:  How was your day today?

Son:  Good.

ME:  What did you do today?

Son:  Stuff.

ME:  What kind of stuff?

Son:  (Shrugs).

Why is it when I’m in the shower, they want to bust in and tell me, in detail, everything that’s happened to them in the last 6 months?
