King books

While reading the Stand for the first time, I have come to the conclusion that it is possibly Stephen King’s best work.  I have decided to rank the top ten King books in order of greatness.

10.  Skeleton Crew

9.  The Bachman Books

8.  Misery

7.  Christine

6.  Pet Sematary

5.  Different Seasons

4.  Needful Things

3.  It

2.  The Gunslinger

1.  The Stand

While I am still about 200 pages away from finishing the Stand, it is between that and the Dark Tower series for greatest Stephen King books.  Now I did leave out a few fan favorites like Salem’s Lot and The Shining because I didn’t care for either of them.  Let me know what you think.

My personal favorite has always been "The Stand". I read and own both versions (the original and the re-draft from the late '80's). I read the Shining last year for the first time and did enjoy that one. I also liked Salem's Lot.

Alan got me hooked on the Gunslinger a few years ago. I tried to read it when I was reading everything written by King that I could get my hands on. He lost my interest and I never got past the first chapter. I'm now glad that I went back and read the whole series, as it's an incredible set of books that mirrors the author's colorful career. As you read from one book to the next you can even see how his writing style changed from one decade to the next. The most fun is recognizing all of the characters that cross over from other books into this epic storyline (or trying to remember where you'd last read about them).
