One of the greatest videos on You Tube

My father-in-law sent this video to me today and I immediately thought that everyone should see this.  Regardless of your thoughts on war or our government, each and every one of us should support our fellow Americans fighting overseas.  Throughout numerous times in our young history, America has been protected by these men and women who risk their lives for our freedom.  It is amazing that many celebrities, sports stars, musicians, and wrestlers, who a lot of us view as out of touch with society, willingly give their time to visit these troops during the holidays, looking at it as a honor to these brave people.

Jeter vs Yankees: Round One

300px-Jeter_Gets_a_Hit2

Derek Jeter is the heart and soul of the New York Yankees.  He has dedicated his life to playing in pinstripes and never once had any real bad press.  He is a model player one which all others should aspire to be.  By all indications, he is the shortstop all teams desire…well used to.

The reality is that Derek Jeter 2010 is not the Derek Jeter 2000 or even 2009.  His stats are Hall of Fame worthy.  He has helped lead the Yankees to 5 World Series.  He has appeared in multiple All-Star games, won 5 Gold Gloves, 4 Silver Slugger awards, and appeared on the MVP voting numerous times.  He has been so important to the Yankees organization that they signed him to a ten year/189 million dollar deal; one that ran out after the Yankees lost to the Rangers in the ALCS.

Now it is time to decide, is Derek Jeter going to be a Yankee?  Almost every bone in my body says “YES”, he remains.  But what this battle between the player and the team will come down to is the contract…how much is Derek Jeter worth today?

Rumors floating around originally said that Jeter and his agent wanted 6 years/150 million dollars.  Since then, his agent has refuted those rumors, stating they merely want 5 years at around 23-24 million per year.  The Yankees have offered three years at around 15 million per year(or 45 million total).  Now that is a huge gap.  So lets look at the last two years of Jeter’s career.

2009:  35 years old.

At bats:  634

Batting Average:  .334

Runs Batted In:  66

Home runs:  18

Doubles:  27

Stolen Bases:  30

Strike outs:  90

On Base %:  .406

2010:  36 years old

At bats:  663

Batting Average:  .270

Runs Batted In:  67

Home runs:  10

Doubles:  30

Stolen Bases:  18

Strike outs:  106

On Base %:  .340

Clearly, Derek Jeter, aged 36, is on the decline.  While several of his numbers are up, such as RBIs and Doubles, the stats that stick out the most is the batting average and the on base percentage.  He is getting on base less than he used to, which is a red flag.  If the Yankees give him what he wants, they will be stuck with an aging and declining player.  Considering they have players like Alex Rodriguez, as well as others, to large deals, they will be hard pressed to dedicate that money to a future DH.  I read this weekend that Jeter’s agent said that the Yankees offer was baffling and they needed to pay Jeter for all he has done for the organization.  I honestly thought the 10 year/185 million dollar deal paid him for those years.

I understand that players have a hard time admitting when they are declining.  Hopefully these two would come some agreement because, as much as I hate the Yankees, Jeter needs to remain in pinstripes for his entire career.

Happy Thanksgiving You S.O.B’s

Happy Thanksgiving to our loyal readers and their families.  Also, a special thanks to those who fight for our freedom and enjoy the holidays, no matter where you are.

Roy Halladay is a stud

As a Mets fan, it pains me to put this in writing.  In fact, I think I am currently throwing up in my mouth as I type.  But I believe that Roy Halladay has to be the best pitcher in baseball and deserved the unanimous vote for the 2010 Cy Young.  First off, I will just give you the numbers.

21-10

2.44 ERA

1.04 WHIP

219 Ks

1 Perfect Game.

1 Playoff No Hitter (only the second in playoff history)

9 Complete games

What has always awed me was the fact that the manager, whether Manuel or Gaston, can easily rely on Halladay to complete 1/2 of his games.  In the past three years he has 27 complete games, 10 more than anyone else.  This is at a time where many pitchers might have one or two throughout the entire season.

Roy Halladay has been a stud since 2002.  What made me realize how dominant he is was a short special on the MLB network.  They were reviewing the CY Young voting and talked of his past.  In 2001, he was dropped of the MLB roster, as the Blue Jays sent him back to the minors, and not to AAA but to their Single A affiliate.  Since he has returned to the major league roster, he has now won two Cy Young awards, one in each league, as well as been in the top five for voting.

My personal Roy Halladay experience came this summer.  My wife, as well as Keith’s, bought us Mets/Phillies tickets for an August game in NYC.  This was our first time there, and I should write a post about our experience there, but we also were able to see a game in lovely Citi Field.  The pitching match-up was ripe for a no hitter, with the masterful Halladay pitching against future HOF pitcher Pat Mitsch (ok probably not).  The game was over in about 2 1/2 hours.  Seriously, Halladay just mowed them down, one by one, running through innings, in no time flat.  Our wives missed three innings just by going to the concession stand.

So where does Doc Halladay rank as active pitchers in baseball?  Unfortunately, he is currently the best pitcher in the planet.

Tom Hardy could be playing…

Rumors have been spreading, well on the internet anyway, that Tom Hardy will be playing Hugo Strange, doctor of Arkham Asylum, and the only one to really know the true identity of Bruce Wayne.  I had listed him as someone of interest so it will be really interesting on how this plays out.  Nolan is also looking to hire two female leads, one being Bruce Wayne’s love interest, the other…who knows.  We could very well see Catwoman or Talia al Ghul roaming Nolan’s Gotham.

A History of Batman: Courtesy of the new Batgirl

I saw this on Let’s Blog Comicbooks (thanks BDS), a great new site I found while surfing around looking to wallow in geekishness.  Very cool artwork.  I love it when the comic artists take a moment to laugh at themselves.

You can find Let’s Blog Comicbooks at http://comicsparadox.blogspot.com/

Thanks to DC Universe  for sharing the images with us.  I’m assuming that the redhead in the wheelchair is the former (and original) Batgirl Barbara Gordon.  You can thank the Joker for the wheelchair as his bullet to her spine put a damper on her career in costumed crimefighing.  But now as Oracle she assists Batman and the kids remotely via computer.

Thank You to all Veterans

I hope that everyone today takes a moment and thanks a veteran or at least remembers those who have defended our rights even at the cost of their own lives.

Regardless of your opinions on the military or the services they provide, no one can deny the sacrifices these individuals make on a daily basis and have done so since we fought for our independence. Without these sacrifices we would not have the rights and privileges we do today.

eagleflag

Without these freedoms, three brothers would never be allowed to post their foolish ramblings online…what would we do then with all of our free time and energy?

So again…to all the veterans out there and the ones that came before, the words Thank you are not nearly enough. But I will do my best to live a life that honors what you have given to me and all Americans.

2010 “A Nightmare on Elm Street” review

I had heard fairly good things about the reinvention of the Nightmare on Elm Street film, but I was skeptical of it nonetheless.  Regardless of what many say, this is not merely a remake like other slasher films such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  All the monsters from those movies hide behind masks.  Any former wrestler can play those parts, as long as they can walk faster than the victim can run.  That is the only prerequisite.  But Freddy is a much different beast.  He has a distinctive look, and only Robert Englund has played the part.  So it will take time for viewers to recognize Jackey Earle Haley as Freddy.  In fact, one of my only real issues with this movie was that they should have used Robert Englund.  He is Freddy.

Besides that, the movie is very surprising, in a good way.  Except for one of the girls, Katie Cassidy , most all of the actors look like they could potentially be in high school.  That was an issue in the original.  There is a lot of violence, taking some of the good scenes from the original.  They didn’t bastardize them but created an homage to the Wes Craven movie (by the way, I watched a show on the making of the first movie.  It was very interesting and I never knew all the issues they had making the first one).  The story was actually more compact than the original, as they made sure to confront the story behind Freddy.  The 1984 movie created more of a boogie man, someone who haunted our nightmares.  This followed the pattern of a “Ring” movie, where the villain is only trying to avenge their own death.

On the Bob rating, I would give it 4 Bobs

While he is all for good horror movies, the senseless violence and gore never appealed to him.

On a normal ranking, I would give it an 8 out of 10.  It was extremely entertaining, and I recommend it to people who enjoyed the original.

Thankskilling: no review

Part of the reason for the Bob rating was as a result of a recommendation of a bad B movie called “Thankskilling”.  However, upon watching the first 45 min of it, the goal of the movie was a poor attempt to be a bad movie.  So, they will not be given the new rating as only movies that are created by serious directors and writers will be ranked.  That does not mean each movie we rank is  high quality or a good movie, but there must be an attempt to be an actual film.  Sorry Thankskilling.
