INSIDIOUS
This weekend, I saw what may be one of the best movies I’ve seen so far this year. No it wasn’t Harry Plopper, although I did see that with the Mrs. and the Animals. Mrs. D had to work Sunday morning so it was an early night for her, providing the perfect opportunity to watch a horror movie (not her favorite). I picked up INSIDIOUS at one of the local Big Red Boxes and Boy and I threw it in the PS3 to give it a watch. It turned out to be one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in ages.
Here’s the trailer for the movie.
INSIDIOUS, to me was reminiscent of the horror movies of the mid to late 60′s that heavily populated our childhood Saturday afternoons courtesy of Creature Double Feature. It had the perfect musical score to set the tone, the creepy atmosphere, and amazingly simple but perfectly executed make-up effects. What put the movie over the top for me was the reliance on the actors to convey the feeling of horror instead of overloading the movie with CGI or gore, so common in horror movies today. The result was one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in many years.
To quickly recap without giving away too much (something for which I’ve become rather infamous in our family), a young family moves into a new house. The children almost immediately start complaining of strange sounds and sights. Not too soon afterward, Mom starts to share in the experiences. When their oldest son falls into an inexplicable coma, the activity increases exponentially. The family moves only to find the trouble follows them to the new house.
A fine complement of ghosts and an unnamed demon are our guests of honor and are expertly portrayed through make-up, quick camera cuts, and expert use of shadow and lighting. This movie has the best portrayal of ghosts I’ve ever seen on film and doesn’t drop the ball. Other films have come close, but seemed to lose focus toward the end of the movie, as if the writers and directors couldn’t figure out how to end the stories. This one did not have that problem and the entire movie builds tension until the final scenes, which I wouldn’t have ended any other way.
If you like horror, I strongly recommend this film.
