oh Keith......we want you, we want you

This one’s for Alan and Keith.  We loved it as kids (well, not Keith) and I’m thinking this one’s worth a Derosby family field trip to the theater.  Two of my kids have been “initiated”.  I think it’s time for Izzy, Sofie, and Keene to become honorary f-ed up Derosby kids like their dads were….still are.

Guillermo Del Toro writing the screenplay and producing, how can we go wrong?  Enjoy.

For those that do not know the story, Craig’s comment about being banned from picking a movie are correct.  In 2006, we traveled to Scotland with a group of high school students.  One night, when figuring out what to do, Craig mentioned going see a movie.  He said that “An American Haunting” looked good so it was agreed that we would spend roughly 20 dollars per ticket to view the movie.  End result?   It sucked big time.  While I tease Craig about this a lot, it wasn’t his fault.  Movies concerning the paranormal are so hit and miss.  The scares throughout the film are important but it is the final chapters that explain the film.  If the hidden theme is lame, the movie becomes lame.

The latest “strike-out” movie is “The Last Exorcism”.  It started out so well and I honestly thought the concept was good.  A priest who has lost his faith sets up fake exorcisms in order to help families.  He does not believe in them and refuses to accept the fact that God and the Devil exist.  Unfortunately, things are turned upside down when the girl is “seemingly” possessed.  The first hour and seventeen minutes rock out with your….well you know what I mean.  If you decide to watch it, turn it off at that point.  Accept the fact that you won’t know if the girl is really possessed or not.  Because if you watch on, and I am expecting you will, it will turn crappy fast.  The ending makes no sense and the director clearly wanted to make an ending which left the viewer thinking.  And he got me thinking that his movie turned in to a steaming pile of crap.

The “Paranormal Activity” series were decent in the way they clearly drag you in to viewing the camera scenes as they happen.  The stories make no sense and my worry is one day they will attempt to describe why the house is haunted.  When they do, we will all think it sucks and another series is down the drain.

The “Blair Witch Project” was very good in its individualism, using the view of the main character as he/she goes through the motions.  It allows the viewer to be scared along with the protagonist.  But this is played…so played.

Craig is right to think I want to see this newest survival paranormal movie.  It looks very good but random girls in white robes has been done before.  Once I find out more about my Daddy and Baby Monster Hunters series, I plan on writing a story dealing with the paranormal.  The reason I think it will be different is the stories are real.  Whether you believe in spirits or not, my brother and I lived in a haunted house in the early 2000′s.  While the backstory will be fictional, the events and hauntings will be real.

One thing I was pondering as I was watching “A Haunting in Connecticut” was the fact that if a person has been a part of a haunting, he/she doesn’t experience what we see on the movies.  Creaks, voices, shadows, footsteps:  those are all part and parcel of living in a haunted house.  But some of the movies seems to build off of unnecessary scares without realizing that a real person who might not believe in the paranormal might be afraid of small things.

I dedicate these videos to my brothers. It’s that time of year kids. I’ve even gotten into the spirit, joining up in their fantasy league. I don’t know baseball, so we’ll see how well I do. I’m holding out for September when the Patriots take the field again.

I’d also like to welcome the newest Derosby brother, Keene Robert Derosby, who joined our family on March 28th. Congrats to Keith and Elaine for yet another gorgeous Derosby kid. I’m still not sure how we pulled off so many cute kids, as it’s certainly not because of the Derosby genes.

Brandon Routh (Superman from Superman Returns and guest appearances in TV’s Chuck and as one of the evil exes in Scott Pilgrim vs the World) and and Sam Huntington (Josh the werewolf from the American version of Being Human and Jimmy Olsen in Superman Returns) team up for this comedy/horror based on a Dark Horse Comics title of the same name. Looks entertaining enough. I’m pulling for Routh as I feel he got the bulk of the blame for Superman Returns being the bomb it was and not Bryan Singer, who I think should get his director card revoked. This guy plays off the “Maine accent” with his now famous battle cry of “Come Join the Paaahty!” (that’s Party for those of you who haven’t read a Stephen King book in your lifetime).  We even get to hear this guy on radio spots, screeching his message to all who aren’t fast enough to change the channel in time.

This guy is about as stiff as they come.  I love the full-on ninja slash he does at the end of the commercial though.  “Home of the <slash> rock bottom deal”.   Makes me laugh every time.

Marden’s:

Marden’s is a discount warehouse with 14 locations in Maine (I only knew of 3.  You learn so much from the Internet).  My kids were quick to point out this next lady shared an uncanny resemblance to one of our aunts.   She does.  It’s creepy.

Jolly John:

This guy has been around for 30 years or so.  With his grating catch phrase “I’m not Jolly unless you’re happy…” he’s been assaulting the airwaves on both TV and radio spots since the beginning.  His car dealership did a promotion back in the late ’80′s, giving away cardboard “Jolly John” masks at all the dealership outlets and for any local businesses that wanted a case.  Naturally, Alan called up and was promptly shipped an entire case of masks.  Immediately upon receipt, Alan started distributing them to the family by strategically locating them under bedsheets, in kitchen drawers, in textbooks, on the bathroom mirror, etc….

The China Dine-ah:

This place isn’t half bad.  Good food, always busy but we’ve been seated relatively quickly every time.  The theme song….well give it a listen and you tell me.  Then listen to it about 10 more times in a row.  When they air the commercials for this place you hear this song at every commercial spot, so about every 10 minutes or so.  It gets old FAST.  Click on the link below and give their theme song a play (it’s right on their home page, you should be looking right at it when you first get there).

Big Al’s:

This guy’s clearly “not from around here”, sporting more of a New York accent and the same gorilla tee shirt in every tv spot.   If you can find him on the web, give him a look.

CMP (Central Maine Power):

This one’s a classic.  The commercials were for Central Maine Power Company and featured one of their line workers, Jim Wright.  The guy ended every commercial with “No Liun is save ta touch, EVAH.” (no line is safe to touch, ever).  I could not locate a copy of any of his old commercials anywhere on the internet.  I did find his Facebook Fan Page though.

This might have been Alan and Keith’s favorite go-to crap movie back when we were kids. Now everyone has another chance to marvel over just how bad this movie really was.   And this movie is up there on the list of worst movies EVER produced.  It’s definitely the worst one I’ve ever seen.  And I’ve seen both “Plan 9″, “Robot Monster”, “Dr. Parnassus”, and “Anchorman”.  I put this one at the head of the pack.

I’m expecting Cloverfield-type disappointment to set in about a week after seeing Monsters.  In an age of incredible possibilities through CGI, I guess I get a little suspicious nowadays when the directors refuse to show you what everybody in the movie is running or hiding from.  There’s a fine line between suspense and “we have no idea what to make this thing look like, so we’ll work around it by pretending to be artsy and creative and not show you anything”.

I’m planning for mainstream-horror fare from Case 39, a psychological looking Omen-meets-The Exorcist  movie starring Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper.  It looks like it has real potential, which is the problem.  I can handle a bad movie that knows it’s bad:  they’re fun to watch even when they’re meant to be serious.  It’s the ones that have all the potential in the world then fail to deliver that I can’t stand.  After watching this trailer, I relegated this one to the Red Box pile pending further review.

Let Me In, starring Chloe Moretz (the entertaining and amazingly vulgar Hit Girl from Kick-Ass) looks to be the best of the bunch and has a real indie-horror feel to it.  Kid befriends the girl next door who turns out to be a murderous vampire.  Maybe I’ll drag the other Derosby Brothers to the theater for this one.
